The October birthstone is mostly mined in Australia, and in the 1890s when high quality Australian opals appeared on the market they became a serious threat to the diamond industry—diamond cartels even spread the rumors that the opal was unlucky in an attempt to discourage people from buying them! Who knew how controversial this little gem could be?!
