You’ve seen them around and regardless of what you think, you’ve probably worn one yourself at some point in your life: the flat, rounded, collar named for the costume worn by Maude Adams in her 1905 role as Peter Pan. That collar that became de rigeur on little girl dresses in the 1920s and has come in and out of fashion ever since. You thought it was left to die back with the grungy ’90s but—surprise!—the persistent Peter Pan collar is back again. Strangely, this time it doesn’t bother us so much because the current incarnation is less “cute” (kiss of death for fashionable, grown women), and more “sophisticated” and yes, even “edgy”.
Last fall the Peter Pan collar trend started picking up steam and has carried over into spring and summer. It can be seen most frequently on fashion and hipster icons like Alexa Chung, Carey Mulligan, Kirsten Dunst, Zooey Deschanel and Michelle Williams, but you don’t have to be a hipster to pull it off. Try this trend in necklace form, like the Stella style by Dannijo or one of the many others on Fashionologie. Remember when 2000 rolled around and we all thought it’d be weird that some day, in the far distant future, there would be 90s theme parties and we’d look back at the decade we felt we’d never grow out of and say, “That’s so 90s!”?
Well that time has come, and the 90s are back with chokers updated with a twist for today. Our favorites are Dannijo’s metal versions which span the quirky and elegant. I could see the gold one with one of Tom Ford for Gucci’s white jersey dresses a la Toni Braxton.
